Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei is often called the father of modern science because he helped unite observation, experiment, and mathematical reasoning into a more reliable method of understanding nature. Born in Pisa, Italy, Galileo made major contributions to the study of motion and mechanics, but his most famous achievements came through astronomy. Using an improved telescope, he observed that the Moon was not a perfect smooth sphere, but had mountains and valleys. He discovered moons orbiting Jupiter, proving that not everything revolved around Earth, and he observed the phases of Venus, which strongly supported the heliocentric model of the solar system. These findings challenged the long-dominant geocentric worldview. At the same time, his work on falling bodies, inertia, and motion helped lay the groundwork for Newtonian mechanics. Galileo's importance to the world lies not only in what he discovered, but in how he sought truth. He insisted that nature must be studied through evidence rather than protected by tradition or authority.
