Biography
Charles Darwin was one of the central founders of modern life science, and his greatest achievement was the theory of evolution by natural selection. That idea fundamentally changed how humanity understands the origin of species, the diversity of life, and the relationship between human beings and the natural world. Born in England, Darwin joined the voyage of HMS Beagle as a young man and spent years observing geology, plants, animals, and island ecosystems across the world. Those observations eventually became the basis for his scientific breakthrough. In 1859, he published *On the Origin of Species*, which explained that in environments where resources are limited and competition exists, individuals with traits better suited to survival and reproduction are more likely to pass those traits on. Over long periods of time, this process can produce major biological change. Darwin's contribution gave biology a unifying explanatory framework, much as relativity later did for physics. His ideas influenced genetics, ecology, paleontology, behavior studies, agriculture, disease evolution, and conservation biology. Most importantly, he placed humanity back within the history of life itself, showing that human beings are part of nature, not separate from it. That insight reshaped science, philosophy, and the modern understanding of life on Earth.
